Reimagining Childhood: The Joy of Recess

When was the last time you truly got to act like a kid again and play around? Not playing in the sense of a fitness class, a networking event, or a team-building workshop, but the joyful kind of play that came naturally when we were kids. It felt so easy back then. Think back to recess. We played kickball games, drew whatever came to mind on the sidewalks with chalk, and laughed across the playground.

As adults, we often prioritize productivity over play. But what if, for just one afternoon, we allowed ourselves to return to that childlike joy? That's what inspired our project, Imagine We Could Be Kids Again.

Why Play Matters More Than Ever:

Research indicates that play is not limited to children; it fosters creativity, lowers stress levels, and facilitates the development of deep connections. Making time for play is not just meant to be sentimental. Play isn't just for kids in our community. It's the key to helping us increase creativity and laughter.

We think that brand experiences should create moments that create lasting impressions, not just bring people together. Because of this, our upcoming event will not be a conventional networking mixer or happy hour. Instead, we're extending an invitation to something new: Recess, for adults.

Two Ways to Play: We’re building this project around two core experiences:

Recess, Grown-Up Edition:

Remember four square, tag, or that game of dodgeball that was the highlight of your week? We’re going to recreate the best parts of playground life. Only this time, we will have snacks, music, and a community that shares your drive and energy. It's an opportunity to enjoy yourself and rediscover your carefree side, which adulthood often masks.

Board Game Nights:

On days when the weather kept us indoors, the fun didn’t stop; we just moved it inside. Our board game event brings that same energy, with classics like Connect Four and Jenga. It’s not about keeping score; it’s about laughter, high-fives, and the kind of fun you never want to end.

A Unique Spin on Community:

What is unique about Imagine We Could Be Kids Again? It's a way of thinking, not just an event. We are creating experiences that align with our brand's promise of creativity, community, and connection.

Whether you're a student seeking a way to distract yourself from your coursework, a UMN staff member, or a young professional seeking purposeful ways to relax, this is your opportunity to spend some time doing something more memorable. Along with stories to tell, you'll leave with a reminder that imagination can still be powerful, even as an adult.
