More than a game: The role of global sports bridging cultural divides

Sports are a unifying force across the world, with billions of fans who gather to watch their favorite team play. Many of these fans are different nationalities, with different religions and cultures they identify with. Despite these seemingly divisive differences, they still come together to participate in this global phenomenon. From soccer to cricket to esports, sports have become a truly engaging and integral part of society.

The Most Popular Sport: Soccer’s Extensive Global Reach

Soccer, or “Futbol”, is one of the most popular sports in the world, with over 3.5 billion fans. The Premier League in England is the most-watched sports league in the world and has an estimated 1.87 billion diverse people following the teams. Outside of the Premier League, there are 211 Fifa-recognized national soccer associations that come together every four years to participate in the World Cup. At the end of 2022, Fifa claimed that 1.5 billion people tuned in to watch the final match, surpassing the Super Bowl.

Interestingly, a significant number of fans support a team or club outside of their own nation, typically stemming from their favorite player in a league. Though the rivalries between teams are quite intense, fans in jerseys will immediately bond with each other, no matter where in the world they find themselves.

Increasing Global Connectivity: Social Media And The Rise Of Esports

Since the start of the 21st century, digital platforms have only increased the popularity of sports and introduced new ways for fans to connect. Fans will often follow their favorite teams and celebrate wins or argue losses in comment sections, bringing people together nonetheless. A total of 811 million accounts engaged with official FIFA social platforms during the World Cup Qatar in 2022, breaking the record for any global sporting event. After a goal by Kylian Mbappé, Twitter recorded the fastest rate of posting ever on the platform with 24,400 published tweets. On top of that, some of the most followed people on Instagram are sports players:

  1. Cristiano Ronaldo: 614 million followers, currently on Al-Nassr FC in Saudi Arabia.

  2. Lionel Messi: 495 million, currently on the Inter Miami CF team (soccer).

  3. Virat Kohli: 265 million, currently on the Indian national cricket team.

Another way connectivity has escalated is through esports, where hundreds of millions of people gather to watch their favorite leagues compete on Valorant or League of Legends. Accessible through the internet, these games have become another essential way of connecting people across the globe. By 2025, it’s estimated that there will be over 318 million eSports enthusiasts worldwide, with a significant proportion of fans originating in Asia.

Uniting Diverse Cultures Through International Sports

In the modern era, the world is home to 195 countries with the ability to engage in communications anywhere and bond over shared interests like sports. Sports media has evolved into a medium that allows viewers to gain exposure to new cultures, making the population as a collective more globally minded and open to learning about one another. Other added benefits come from rising tourism of sports fans going to other countries to watch their favorite teams play, resulting in economic growth and cultural exchange. More importantly, it has ignited deeper, more critical conversations surrounding acceptance and becoming more inclusive as a globe.
